In today’s digital world, social media is more than just a platform—it’s a space where student-athletes connect with fans and peers, build their personal brands and sometimes face intense scrutiny. The potential impacts to their mental health can be profound and understanding how to navigate that space is more important than ever. In this session, experts will discuss: NCAA research data on student-athlete mental health and social media behaviors from the 2024 NCAA Social Environments study; The role of trust in the provider-patient relationship; and Practical strategies to promote using social media use in a way that fosters positive connection and mitigates potential harms. Presenters: Kelsey Gurganus-Wright, Associate Director of Research on Student-Athlete Well-Being and Experiences, NCAA Research. Dr. Marcy Faustin, Associate Clinical Professor; Family & Sports Medicine, Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Family and Community Medicine; Co-Head Team Physician and Medical Director, UC Davis Division I Intercollegiate Athletics.
