Ash Wednesday. On this solemn beginning of Lent, Scripture calls us to return to God with honesty, humility, and hope. Joel 2:1–2, 12–17 The prophet urges the people to “return to the Lord with all your heart,” reminding us that God’s mercy is deeper than our failings. Psalm 51:1–17 A prayer of confession asking God to create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us. 2 Corinthians 5:20b–6:10 Paul pleads with the church to be reconciled to God, embracing a life shaped by grace even in hardship. Matthew 6:1–6, 16–21 Jesus teaches that true devotion is quiet, sincere, and hidden in God—calling us to store up treasures of the heart rather than treasures of the world. Together, these readings invite us into a season of reflection, repentance, and renewal. “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” These words call us not to despair, but to a deeper trust in the God who restores and makes all things new.
