Andy Carruthers showcases The Redwood Violin, an instrument he made from all locally sourced materials and how it can sound as beautiful as the instruments he makes in the traditional way. He started this project during the pandemic as a way to connect to his community and discovered in the process the rich history of the area and a multitude of craftspeople all willing to help create a beautiful violin. You'll also be delighted by youth violinist Henry Miller. A native of Oxfordshire, England, Andrew worked at the Lawrence Berkeley Research Labs in California before deciding to follow his passion for building stringed instruments. In 1996 he opened his workshop in Santa Rosa, providing restoration services to some of the world’s leading violin dealers. Andrew’s recent work has included a series of experimental or “Off Beat” violins that explore aspects of violin making tradition and aesthetics. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
