We don’t hear many tandas sung by women in the milongas, but this week we have one for you, from Uruguay... ++Timeslots++ Start 00:00 Tutorial 00:28 Gloria 04:11 Sin estrellas 06:22 No quiero ni acordarme 08:22 Tu corazón 10:17 Tanda of the Week Donato Racciatti and Nina Miranda. The star of this Tanda of the Week is Nina Miranda. She was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1925 as Nelly María Hunter. And she called herself Nina Miranda after the character in the film ‘Puerta cerrada’, played by singer and actress Libertad Lamarque. Nina Miranda is best known for her recordings from the 1950s with the orchestras of Donato Racciatti and Graciano Gómez, but she also performed on Radio Belgrano with the orchestra of Lucio Demare. Her career came to an abrupt end in 1957 when she married. Her husband insisted she stopped performing, he simply told her: ”Either tango or me”. By the way, this is very similar to what had happened to the Nina Miranda character in the film – where the husband-to-be made her choose between the theatre and him... Nina Miranda’s husband died in 2006, and she returned to tango the same year, singing, performing again and making records, Like this one: ‘Por la vuelta’ from 2008. For the tanda of the week, we go back to the 1950s with the orchestra of Donato Racciatti. Donato Racciatti was born in Italy in 1918, but he grew up in Montevideo. He played the bandoneón and started his own orquesta típica in 1948. His orchestra played a relatively simple kind of tango in the 2x4 tradition of Juan d’Arienzo. Not sophisticated or high culture, but tango to dance to. And he was very succesful with it, and popular in Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina, especially in the 1950’s. He worked with numerous singers, but the voice of Nina Miranda was probably the best… The tanda starts with ‘Gloria’, a tango from the 1920s, written by Humberto Canaro (one of the Canaro Brothers) and Armando Tagini. It’s a tango that has been recorded by various orchestras, including Francisco Canaro in 1927 and Alfredo De Angelis in 1950, and Carlos Gardel recorded it as well. It became signature song for Nina Miranda, and one of her biggest hits. It’s an opening track that clearly sets the mood for this tanda and it’s followed by 3 tangos that were written by Donato Racciatti himself: first ‘Sin estrellas’ – with lyrics by Federico Silva Then ‘No quiero ni acordarme’ – music by Donato Racciatti and Carlos Podestá García, and lyrics by Gerónimo Yorio. Once again a song about a love gone wrong and betrayal. And now she “doesn’t even want to remember the day they met”… The final track is: ‘Tu corazón’. The heart wants what it wants, even if it’s a forbidden love… ‘Tu corazón’ is one of Nina Mirandas most popular tangos and a great finale for this upbeat tanda. Music again by Donato Raciatti and lyrics written by Enrique Soriano. So… it’s time to dance! To: 1. Gloria 2. Sin estrellas 3. No quiero ni acordarme 4. Tu corazón Enjoy!
