Nissan Patrol Restoration - Ep.7 Front Mount Intercooler (Mini-Bonus Episode)

The front mount intercooler is considered the most premium way to upgrade the stock zd30 charge cooling & help lower EGT's - this is primarily done in the hotter climates or when people do performance modifications (Eg. bigger turbo, injectors, tunes or EGR blanking). It requires; Drilling/cutting holes in the radiator support walls + modifying the grill support bar. You have to modify the power steering cooler mount bracket to move further back to make room for the intercooler. You have to remove one plastic mounting bracket in the centre of the grill & grind some of the fins from the back so that the grill doesnt contact the new intercooler. (you can't even notice it if done right) You need to cut a hole in the one wheel arch liner rubber flap for a pipe to pass through, & slightly trim the metal shroud edge in that same wheel arch. If you have an aftermarket bigger radiator like mine - the fan shroud may need to be trimmed slightly to make room for a pipe on the intake side. The AC condenser needs to be moved as high as possible in its mounting & you may still need a rubber shim to prevent rubbing. There are a few kits on the market but I recommend the Fabwitz kit if you can afford it - it's made very well. In relations to the coolant cooling system - if you are having overheating issues (of the coolant) - I have read all the back & forth in forums; Definitively - make sure the thermostat is not simply old & faulty - don't overlook this or it may not be operating & opening right. An aftermarket "high flow" unit may help increase flow & thus cooling. The commonly done - 76c opening thermostat used on the tb48 works on a zd30 (which is 82c opening stock) & can be combined with a "high flow" aftermarket design to further increase flow, opening time etc. The sooner opening means the recycle port will be sealed earlier so yes it also decreases average temps - not just initial opening, & the higher flow simply increases cooling if your' radiator, coolant fluid itself + fans etc are all in order. If your unit is old it may be opening too late (hot) & not far enough to seal the recycle port in the right time. (I have tested a new vs old thermostat in heated water & you can see an old one opens too late & not as far as its mean to) So a good, new thermostat should always be done first since its cheapest & easiest before looking at upgrading components :) This video series will include how to rebuild the engine & the body.
