Filmed 11/23/2014 Happy new year everyone! First off, I gotta thank my buddy Shane (thebrakeman17) and his grandpa Bob for this one. They were able to get me into UP's former Southern Pacific Armourdale Yard over in Kansas City, KS. Secondly, YES WE HAD PERMISSION! So I don't need anyone complaining that we were breaking the law, trespassing on private property and giving railfanners a bad reputation. There was none of that. With that out of the way, on with the show... UP's Historic Unit, E9A #949 has been sitting at Armourdale since it made an appearance at the 2014 Streamliners Diesel Locomotives Special in Spencer, North Carolina at the Transportation Museum on May 29th and 30th. As it was passing through Kansas City on it's way back to Cheyenne, WY, it encountered a problem. After being stopped for a period of time and having it's brakes set, when it was set to leave again, it's brakes were not released and the freight units ahead of it, dragged it well over a mile. Yep, all the wheels were flat spotted. So, this unit has been stuck in KC waiting for replacements and not having any luck. Why they don't machine their own, I don't know, but apparently they are looking for replacements, but obviously these old units are very rare today and parts are even more scarce. When we were there, Bob was talking to one of the UP employees who works in the shop there, and he said it would probably be there into January. So I'm glad we went when we did. Far too cold now! Also, it's fitting that GP60 #2012 is sitting there too. Just as Armourdale Yard we're in once belonged to Southern Pacific, that GP60 was also owned by the SP. In January, I will probably be doing a year in review of 2014 video, so if I miss one of my usual upload days (Wednesdays and Sundays), it's probably because I'm working on that. Anyway, thanks everyone for making this my biggest year yet on YouTube! I guess that means you all like what I'm doing, so I'll keep at it, may even start using a tripod, scary thought eh? :D Stay tuned, I have lots to come, and I hope you all have a great New Year too, later!
