The Botvinnik-Carls Defense was named after Carl Carls, a German player from the first half of the 20th century, and Mikhail Botvinnik. I don't know why, though, as they have only played the opening once, Carls once, Botvinnik three times, and scored +0-2=2! I think the opening deserves a new name. It used to be frowned upon because black is allowed to develop the bishop to f5 "without" conseuqences. However, in the last 40 or so years, so many sharp variations became known, including the Tal and the Bayonet, as well as many Short variation problem lines, that many Caro-Kann players have switched to the seemingly ridiculous c5.
