Tone, strengthen and lengthen your core muscles with this full-body pilates workout using small weights. The slow and steady pace of this detailed workout promotes the activation and the endurance of important core muscles that support the arms, chest, shoulders, shoulder blades, hips and back. It also ensures that the proper muscles are being strengthened and stretched without injuring the body. We start with standing exercises to warm up. Next, we go through a variety of mat exercises that simultaneously work upper and lower body focusing on proper abdominal activation to emphasize core strengthening. Last, we perform a functional standing series that involves coordination and balance. Small weights come in the form of toning balls, dumbbells, water bottles or even cans from your pantry! The most recommended weight range is between 1 and 3 lbs. However, if you are used to lifting weights and find them too light, you may go up to 5 lbs max. Just make sure you are still activating the smaller core muscles rather than letting the bigger muscles take over. Some of the benefits of using small weights are: ** Enhanced strength, as a result of combining lighter weight and more repetitions ** Better range of motion: with lighter weights we are able to perform full range of motion for specific movements. This translates into increased flexibility and greater muscle strength ** Less risk of injury : decreased challenge to the body to hold more weight than it can support, allowing more focus on proper form and technique ** No need to rely on momentum: the muscles are the ones doing all the work ** Better performance in daily activities: completing multiple repetitions with light weights increases endurance, reducing the chance of getting fatigued during our daily life activities and sports.
