What's it like inside a Womens homeless shelter in the UK? Due to domestic abuse, I became homeless in October 2022. I spent around a month sleeping in my car and in temporary accommodation arranged by the local housing authority. Presenting as homeless was a low point in my life, and I never expected it. However as the UK moves into a cost of living crisis, more people are facing unexpected homelessness. The cost of rent and mortgages are increasing, whilst the average wage isn't. I have uploaded this tour because, I had no idea what to expect moving into a hostel. Very little information was available, and all the hostel tours didn't seem to feature homeless people. The location of this Womens shelter is anonymous. So I can't disclose where it is, as many women staying in places like these, are in hiding from abusive partners. If you are facing this misfortune and may become homeless yourself, my advice is - you can make it though this. Life is punctuated by good and bad period. Technically it can't get worse than this. So, if you are or might become homeless, you should PRESENT AS HOMELESS. This does not need to be at your local authority, although on some housing waiting lists you may get more 'points' for your home after the shelter by staying local due to work or family ties. Just do it. Yes the whole sector is unfunded and you may have a horrible bathroom, or someone smoking substances in the next room - but it was way safer than being on the streets.
