A short account from each hiker of the day! In (Gevorg Hope’s) fourth season of snowboarding at Mt. Baldy, which I consider the best mountain in California, I had the exciting opportunity to meet Dave the day before our Devils Backbone trip. I recognized Dave from some epic ski videos, which sparked a conversation and led to us sharing some runs. The next day, we tackled the challenging trail, trail braking the backbone to the summit and shredding the Baldy Bowl. I also had the pleasure of meeting you and Brennen through mutual friends from rock climbing. The Devils Backbone hike in winter stands out as one of the most beautiful and rewarding hikes I’ve experienced. However, it is definitely not for the faint of heart or the unprepared. The trail presents long stretches of exposure, where a single misstep can result in a thousand-foot fall. To safely navigate the Devils Backbone in winter, one needs great balance, a cool head, high physical stamina, and the proper equipment and experience. Excellent navigation skills are a must, especially when breaking trail, as one wrong turn can lead you down a completely different side of the mountain with no easy way out. This trail transforms into a completely different challenge in the winter months. Given my longer history as a rock climber compared to my time as a snowboarder, I find comfort in being in a no-fall zone, like the one presented by Devils Backbone in the winter. Brennen Morris, an Orange County native, has been skiing for 23 years in the Southern California area, with Mount Baldy being his favorite place to ski. He has a deep connection to Baldy, having skied there since 2001, following in his father's footsteps, who has been ski patrol at Baldy since the early 70s. Brennen has been dreaming of skiing the Baldy Bowl for over 20 years and met Gevorg through mutual climbing friends. He met Dave and Jason the videographer on the day of the hike. After planning with Gevorg since December, they found a perfect weather window to ski the Baldy Bowl right after a storm. Despite initial nerves, Brennen was motivated to continue the hike by his friends, reaching the summit and experiencing the awe-inspiring ski down the bowl, a dream he'd had for two decades. He shares a celebratory moment with his friends before hiking down, feeling fulfilled after a memorable day. My (David Braun’s) friendship with Gevorg began unexpectedly on a Saturday in the Mt. Baldy lift line. He approached me, asking if I was the guy from Andy Lewicky's online ski videos, which caught me pleasantly off guard. After a quick lift ride and a short adventure, he invited me to join him the next day on the Devils Backbone ascent to Mt. San Antonio. To my delight, Jason Anderson also joined our expedition, equipped with an impressive array of photography skills and gear, eager to document our journey professionally. The Devils Backbone is a visually stunning route, offering a surprising escape into nature right in the heart of Los Angeles. Opting for a lighter, faster approach, I had the unique opportunity to ski down the north side of the Diamond crux toward Lytle Creek. The initial turns in the chute felt like navigating a chalkboard, but soon I was released into the sheer joy of skiing through boot-top powder. Our adventure continued with another exhilarating descent in the Baldy Bowl, which gave us a taste of its southeast facing conditions. Despite encountering fierce 55 mph winds and 40°F temperatures on the summit, which added a sense of foreboding to our descent down the North face, we found the chutes and face remarkably well-filled with snow for April. As Sunday unfolded, we all rejoiced in the memories made and the safe return from our adventure. The window of opportunity for skiing the Baldy Bowl was beginning to close, but we had seized the moment and made the most of the fantastic conditions. Photographer/videographer-Jason Anderson had spoken with Gevorg the day before at the Mount Baldy Banked slalom when Gevorg had mentioned they were going to be hiking Devil‘s backbone to the top of Mount Baldy and dropping in to the Baldy bowl and then hiking out towards the ski hut Trail , Jason was very excited to do something like that and had not done it before so he was all in!! the next morning we all met up. We started the hike and stopped multiple times for jason to take photos and some videos with his drone as we approach the summit. It got pretty windy, the sun was just about to go down so we decided to hike to the edge and drop down the bowl each person had their own fresh line to themselves all in all it was a perfect day perfect weather, good friends, and fun times . I think I speak for us all when I say we can hardly wait to do it again !!!
