Unable to return to Germany because the Royal Navy controlled the Atlantic routes, she was forced to stay in Japan for a long time. In 1942, Germany officially transferred the ship to Japan free of charge in return for Japan’s strategic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. By this time, the Japanese Navy had suffered a crushing defeat in the Battle of Midway, losing four fleet aircraft carriers, resulting in a huge shortage of carrier strength, while its sea lanes of communication came under heavy attack by U.S. submarines. To quickly replenish the number of escort carriers, the Japanese Navy decided to convert this large German passenger liner into an aircraft carrier. In September 1942, the Scharnhorst was incorporated into the Japanese Navy and sent to the Kure Naval Arsenal for conversion. Since the ship was of German design and construction, Japan lacked complete blueprints, so the conversion progressed slowly. She was finally completed and commissioned on December 20, 1943, named Shinyo. The conversion goal of Shinyo was clear: to achieve basic aviation capability as soon as possible, undertake secondary tasks such as aircraft transport, convoy patrol, and logistical support, and relieve the pressure on the fleet carriers.
