A Letter to My Younger Self

You don’t show it to anyone because you don’t know how to express your emotions, but I feel your fear. It echoes beyond the years that divide us. It rides the waves of the tears that I’ve cried for you. And that you’ll cry for her. Pretty soon, you’ll meet a girl who is going to teach you what it means to fall in love. And that same girl will teach you what it means to get your heart broken. And that’s okay, because she is going to give you the keys to the door that you’ve been afraid to open. The door which leads to the room in which I write this letter. She will break right through the wall you’ve constructed around your rigid heart such that the last bit of light escapes. You’ll live in complete darkness for a little while, but that’s precisely what will inspire you to find the light again- this time, for good. I know you’re scared. You don’t feel like you’re mentally prepared to take that leap of faith and follow your dreams. You also have reservations about the type of content that you’re making. You wish you had the courage to live in your truth and express that to the world, but you simply don’t. At least, not yet. In order for you to unlock that courage, you’re going to have to quit your job at H&M. Deep down, you know that your breakthrough is rapidly approaching, but deeply-rooted doubt prevents you from doing what needs to be done. Soon enough, your depression will take care of that for you, and you’ll learn to have unadulterated faith in divine timing. Not only will your YouTube channel take off, but it’ll be from doing content that you genuinely enjoy making. If you knew how close your breakthrough is, you wouldn’t even bother to put in a two weeks’ notice. Believe me when I tell you that your life is about to change. I know you’re scared. A truth that you’ve never shared with anyone except for me. And that’s why I’m here for you. That gut feeling that keeps telling you to quit your job? That’s me. We are inextricably intertwined in a place beyond time. Everything I’m saying will make sense when you type this letter in three years, but for now you have to have blind faith. Oh, and by the way, you’re also going to get into your first relationship a little over a year from now. By the time you realize that you like this girl, you’ll already love her. She will appreciate you in ways that the other girl didn’t, and she will try her best to understand you. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work out, but she will inspire you to self-publish your first book. A book that you’ll write about the other girl. I know you’re scared. You’ve dared to take the path less taken, and no one seems to understand why. But you must remember that the path less taken meets destinations less reached. And that’s why I beseech you to follow it. Your pride? Swallow it. Don’t do this to get back at the people who doubt you; do this to honor the people who believe in you like I do. At the age of 22, my worst days are your best days. And your work days are my rest days. But you have to learn to be patient and trust the process. I mean, I guess you don’t really have much of a choice anyway. I know you’re scared. And that’s okay. Because soon enough, you’ll find your way to me. And only then will you be free from the past that you’ve yet to live.
