Iya Khalil found herself waking up in the Emergency Room with no recollection of exiting her flight from San Francisco. She was told she suffered from a life threatening embolism and the outcome was uncertain. Thankfully she recovered, but when she asked her doctor if the event could have been predicted and consequently prevented entirely, the answer was no. As a theoretical physicist turned computational biologist, Iya has dedicated her career to leveraging AI and machine learning to predict and optimize patient outcomes to treatments, so was deeply dissatisfied with the response. Great strides have been made since her hospitalization. We now have the ability to measure and mathematically learn the complexity underlying disease and response to treatment. We now have the technological capability to measure all aspects of our health throughout our lifetimes and leverage powerful mathematics to precisely predict what will happen and how to change it- which is why Iya is confident that AI will indeed save her life the second time around. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Iya is a technology entrepreneur and physicist with a vision of transforming medicine into a discipline that is quantitative, predictive, and patient-centric via big data analytic approaches. She co-founded two big data companies, Via Science and GNS Healthcare, which are underpinned by a proprietary computational engine that she co-invented. Dr. Khalil’s expertise spans applications from drug discovery and development to treatment algorithms that can be applied at the point of care. She was recognized by President Obama as a leading entrepreneur in genomic medicine. She was named to the PharmaVOICE 100 list of the most inspiring people in the life sciences industry for bringing people from healthcare and life sciences together to change patients’ lives with predictive modeling. Iya serves on the board of the Accelerated Cure Project and the Scientic Advisory Board of Biocentury Innovations. Recently, she was appointed to the Massachusetts Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) Oversight Council by Governor Baker.
