If God determines every event, is He just playing both sides of the chessboard? This is the famous challenge raised by modern Provisionists (like Leighton Flowers) and Arminians. They argue that a truly sovereign God acts as a master Chess Player who outsmarts genuinely free opponents, rather than a cosmic Puppeteer pulling the strings of predetermined actors. They claim that for human beings to be morally responsible, we must possess "Libertarian Free Will"—the ability to act autonomously, free from God's absolute, determining decrees. But does this version of "free will" actually make logical sense? In Part 2 of our 3-part series exploring Soteriology and Freedom of the Will, we put the Arminian and Provisionist concept of human freedom to the ultimate test. Leaning on the masterful logic of Puritan theologian Jonathan Edwards, we expose why the human idea of Libertarian Free Will is fundamentally incoherent. In this episode, we dive into: The Chess Master vs. The Puppeteer: We unpack the popular Provisionist analogy used to defend human autonomy and conditional election, and why they reject the Calvinistic view of meticulous divine control. The Incoherence of Libertarian Freedom: Why Edwards argues that a "self-determining" will is a logical contradiction. (If every free choice requires a preceding free choice to determine it, you end up with an impossible infinite regress!) The Myth of "Indifference": Arminians argue true freedom requires the will to be in a state of perfect equilibrium or indifference. Discover why Edwards calls this an absurdity—proving that it is impossible to "choose without a choice" or "prefer without a preference." The Power of the Strongest Motive: Why your will is never truly neutral, but is always dictated by the greatest apparent good or strongest motive in your mind at the moment of choice. Moral Necessity: How Reformed theology reconciles God's absolute, infallible foreknowledge and sovereign decrees with genuine human accountability, without reducing man to a mere machine. Does Jonathan Edwards successfully dismantle the Provisionist "Chess Master" analogy? Or does the Reformed view truly reduce humanity to mere puppets? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
