Description: Welcome back to the Deep Dive! In Parts 1 and 2, we explored William Perkins' 400-year-old map of Calvinist theology—the unbreakable "Golden Chain" in which every human action and eternal destiny are meticulously determined by the decree of God. But what if there is another way to read the biblical map? In our epic finale, we clash Perkins' Elizabethan Puritanism with modern "Provisionism," a soteriological framework popularized by Dr. Leighton Flowers and the Soteriology 101 podcast. If Perkins' system is built on Exhaustive Divine Determinism, Provisionism pushes back to defend human "response-ability" and the universal love of God. In this episode, we unpack: TULIP vs. PROVIDE: We contrast the classic Calvinist acronym (Total Inability, Limited Atonement) with the Provisionist acronym PROVIDE (People sin, Responsible, Open door, Vicarious atonement, Illuminating grace, Destroyed, Eternal security). The "Dead" Debate: Does being "dead in sin" mean humanity is like a lifeless corpse entirely unable to believe without being irresistibly regenerated first (Perkins)? Or are we "dead" like the Prodigal Son—lost, broken, and separated in a far-off land, but still able to "come to our senses" and return home when the Father calls? The Duck and the Rabbit (Romans 9): How Provisionists look at the exact same "Potter and the Clay" verses as Calvinists but see a completely different picture. We explore the argument that Paul isn't talking about God creating individuals for eternal damnation before they are born, but rather the temporary, judicial hardening of the nation of Israel to bring about the Messiah. The Ship of Corporate Election: Is election a pre-temporal VIP list of specific individuals? Provisionists argue that God elected Christ (the "Elect One") and the corporate body of the Church—like a Captain and a ship—and He provides an "Open Door" for whosoever will to come aboard through faith. The Chess Master Analogy: We tackle the ultimate question of God's sovereignty. Does true sovereignty mean God must play both the black and white pieces to ensure His victory (Determinism)? Or is God so sovereign—like a grand Chess Master—that He can allow His opponents completely free moves and still perfectly accomplish His will? We’ve looked at two radically different maps of salvation. Which view of God's sovereignty resonates with you more: the meticulous, script-writing author of the Golden Chain, or the brilliant, responsive Chess Master of Provisionism?
