What a treat to play a jig with Pete Peterson finger-picking the banjo. Pete is without question the greatest exponent of this particular style of playing, which is rarely heard today. I'm truly honored that he would lend his talents to this project. I first came across "The Garryowen" in the Cole's 1000 Fiddle Tunes and then heard it used in the Dustin Hoffman film "Little Big Man". It figures prominently with General George Armstrong Custer in the movie. Wikipedia describes this famous ditty as "...an Irish tune for a quickstep dance. It was selected as a marching tune for British, Canadian, and American military formations, most notably Gen. George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry." Tunearch.org dates the piece to 1803 as compiled in collections by Niel and Nathanial Gow, father and son composers and performers from Perthshire in Scotland. Thanks to Patt for the fine camera work. I'm setting out to play 100 jigs, quadrilles, gigues and 6/8'ers on YouTube. Over the next several months I'll corral my unsuspecting friends, acquaintances, people I don't even know (and especially the long-suffering Patt Plunkett) and cajole or coerce them at beer-point to play along.
