WHY CHRISTIANS SANCTIFY FOOD The custom of sanctifying food at Easter appeared in the Orthodox Church in ХIV century.. For a long time, Christians brought to church only sheep baked from dough. In time, the Easter basket was filled with another product. The tradition has gained cultural wealth. After a long Lent, the Church blesses Christians for enjoying all the gifts of nature. Also, don’t restrict yourself to food. WHAT SHOULD YOU PUT INTO THE EASTER BASKET Most hostesses try to put into the basket as much as different products. According to the orthodox tradition, there should be only those products that people didn’t eat during Lent. First of all symbol of life eggs– pysanky (painted eggs) or krashanka and paska from short-crust pastry. Also put into the basket cheesy baked pudding, sausage, and leaf lard. Paska is bread of everlasting life, the sign of God’s kingdom. It’s also a symbol of Chris, who voluntarily suffered for saving mankind. They should be eaten or shared with poor people. In most of the eparchies aren’t allowed to carry an Easter basket with meat products to the church. It isn't forbidden because sanctifying is made outside. HOW TO DECORATE AN EASTER BASKET In most regions of Ukraine, Easter baskets are decorated with greenery as symbol of immortality. Trusted candle in the paska is an obligatory attribute. It is switched on during liturgyЇ. It’s the purest victim for God. The wax from the Easter candle it was supposed to be medicinal against all illnesses. The basket is covered by an embroidered towel. Symbols of it are variety - this is God’s tablecloth, the cloth of Saint Maria, and a sign of hospitality. Any event in our ancestors’ lives didn’t complete without a towel. The food from the Easter basket, which is sanctified during liturgy, is eaten for soul’s salvation, for corporal and spiritual health, and for well-being in the house. It’s possible to feel the miraculous strength of the Easter meal when meal was sanctified by prayer.
