This product is quite versatile & primarily was made (1970/71) to accompany the Ultra range of stereo compatible mono record players by plugging in a 3.5mm jack to jack lead between the record player's "stereo" socket & the "pickup" socket on this product. Upon making this connection, the record player's pickup cartridge is switched so that the record player becomes the right hand channel, and this product; the left. The 6401 uses the same HiFi amplifier module as used in the HMV Stereomaster 2040 & some others & uses a matched complimentary pair of germanium transistors, AD161 & AD162, which in 38 years in the trade rarely have had to change. The 6401 also is fitted with a 4-pin DIN socket into which may be plugged in a crystal microphone for "stand alone" public address work. The amplifier also has 3.5mm jack sockets for "tape" & "radio", the latter intended to be connected to the earphone socket of a transistor radio for amplification/quality purposes. This product was bought in for this demonstration off Ebay. All the electrolytic capacitors were changed especially bearing in mind it was fitted with those dreadful black Callins & Hunts capacitors, However, on test of the removed capacitors with our ESR meter, only the power supply smoothing capacitor was found to be slightly defective....but at 47 years old it was time to change them anyway!
