In this video, we demonstrate how to set up and take down the Gallagher SmartFence, a portable electric fencing system designed for fast, flexible livestock management. The SmartFence is an all-in-one temporary fencing solution with built-in posts and reels, making it ideal for rotational grazing, temporary paddocks, alleyways, and short-term livestock control. What You’ll Learn in This Video ✔ How to set up the Gallagher SmartFence ✔ How to connect it to an existing hot perimeter fence ✔ How to use it independently with a solar energizer ✔ How to build corners and secure turns ✔ How to take it down quickly and efficiently ✔ Practical applications for grazing and livestock movement Setting Up the SmartFence The SmartFence features: Built-in independent posts Integrated reel system Rope stays on alternating posts Ground pegs for securing corners 330 feet of four-strand line In this demonstration, we connect it to an existing hot perimeter fence, but it can just as easily be used independently with a portable solar energizer anywhere on the ranch. Key setup tips include: Securing corner posts against the direction of strain Using the built-in tent pegs for stability Attaching to a solid post or stepping directly into the ground Ensuring proper tension as you unroll Once connected and energized, you have an instant temporary paddock. Practical Applications The SmartFence is extremely versatile. It can be used for: Rotational grazing paddock subdivision Creating temporary alleyways for moving livestock Managing horses on range without permanent infrastructure Fencing animals out of hay or feed areas Quick temporary containment for sheep, pigs, and horses At full setup, the fence height is approximately 35 inches with four wires, which works well for sheep, pigs, and horses. It’s more than sufficient for cattle, though typically more than necessary. Multiple units can be connected together for longer runs. Taking It Down One of the biggest advantages of the SmartFence is speed. To remove it: Turn off or disconnect from the energizer Wind it back up using the built-in reel Pull posts out as you rewind As the fence winds up, it automatically re-tensions the lines for neat storage. This makes moving animals simple and efficient. Maintenance & Repair Another major benefit is that nearly every component is replaceable: Reels, Posts, Pegs, Washers and small hardware If something breaks, you don’t need to replace the entire unit — you can repair individual parts, making it a durable long-term tool. Why It Works for Rotational Grazing For rotational grazing to work, fencing needs to be: Fast, Lightweight, Flexible, Easy to move The Gallagher SmartFence checks those boxes. If moving animals is complicated, it doesn’t get done. This system keeps pasture management simple and efficient. If you’re looking for a portable, easy-to-use electric fence system for rotational grazing or livestock movement, this walkthrough shows exactly how the SmartFence performs in real-world ranch conditions.
