In this video, we demonstrate how to safely pass mid-rope protection while ascending and descending on rope access systems. The focus is on maintaining continuous protection, correct sequencing, and disciplined backup management throughout the manoeuvre. During ascent, the process begins by opening and repositioning rope protectors in stages, always keeping the backup device high and operational. The working line and backup line are managed independently, ensuring that at no point is protection compromised. Where additional backup devices are available, these can be used to maintain redundancy while passing protection points, reducing physical effort and maintaining control. Rope protectors that are choked onto the rope are carefully removed, secured to the harness to prevent drops, and repositioned once a suitable location is reached. The video also covers how to re-install mid-rope protection using friction wraps and choking techniques, ensuring the protector stays fixed over abrasion points. Care is taken to correctly orient, position, and fully close the protection before continuing the ascent. When descending, the same structured approach is applied in reverse. The descender is operated in controlled increments while rope protection is progressively moved. Backup devices are kept high at all times, and rope protectors are repositioned methodically to ensure continuous protection against sharp edges or abrasion. The emphasis throughout is on patience, rope awareness, and maintaining correct device positioning rather than rushing the process. This technique is essential for safe rope access operations where ropes must pass over edges or structures, and it reinforces the importance of systematic movement, redundancy, and equipment control when managing mid-rope protection. ⚠️ These videos are for guidance and familiarisation only. Rope access techniques must always be learned and assessed in person under the supervision of a qualified IRATA Instructor, following current IRATA guidance, manufacturer instructions, and site-specific risk assessments.
