In this video, we demonstrate a rescue from a fall arrest system, where a casualty is suspended on their fall arrest equipment and must be transferred safely onto a rope access system for recovery. The sequence begins with the rescuer climbing on fall arrest lanyards and rigging two pre-tied ropes at height using barrel knots. The rescuer then transfers onto a standard rope access setup, descends to the casualty, and uses the casualty’s own descender as a lifting and progress-capture device. A small hauling system is built using a pulley, handled ascender, and foot loop to raise the casualty just enough to remove their load from the fall arrest equipment. Once the casualty is lifted clear, the hauling system is removed and a secure, upright connection is established between rescuer and casualty using a cows tail and adjustable lanyard connected at the sternal point. The casualty’s fall arrest equipment is then removed, and their weight is transferred fully onto the rescuer’s system. With the casualty safely attached, additional friction is added to the rescuer’s descender and a controlled descent can begin, keeping the casualty clear of the structure throughout. This technique bridges fall arrest and rope access rescue methods, demonstrating how to convert a fall arrest suspension into a safe rope-based evacuation. ⚠️ These videos are for guidance and familiarisation only. Rope access techniques must always be learned and assessed in person under the supervision of a qualified IRATA Instructor, following current IRATA guidance, manufacturer instructions, and site-specific risk assessments.
