In this video, we demonstrate how to carry out an aid climb rescue to reach, secure, and recover a casualty positioned away from the main rope system using fixed anchors. You’ll see how to aid climb across anchor points to position yourself safely and efficiently near the casualty, establish stable working points, and deploy pre-rigged rescue ropes from a carried rope bag. The video shows how to rig a high, clean rescue line using compact knots, safely deploy ropes to the ground, and convert the casualty’s own descender into a temporary hauling system to lift their weight clear of their cows’ tails. From there, the process transitions into full rope access positioning. You’ll see how to move yourself onto the rescue ropes, install a backup device, remove unnecessary equipment to avoid tangles, and establish a hard connection between rescuer and casualty using a Grillon. The casualty is then transferred from their system onto the rescuer’s descender in a controlled manner, with friction added to manage the increased load. An aid climb rescue is used when a casualty is positioned away from the main rope line and cannot be reached directly. It allows the rescuer to move laterally across fixed anchors, establish independent rescue systems, and complete a safe transfer before descending together. ⚠️ These videos are for guidance and familiarisation only. Rope access techniques must always be learned and assessed in person under the supervision of a qualified IRATA Instructor, following current IRATA guidance, manufacturer instructions, and site-specific risk assessments.
