Welcome To The Satoshi Suspects, a series where we profile the most likely candidates behind the Mysterious Bitcoin Creator Satoshi Nakamoto. In each Short Episode We take a look at an individual Who either Could be Satoshi themselves or could have contributed to Bitcoin if Satoshi Nakamoto is in fact a group and not simply 1 person This episode will focus on Nick Szabo, one of the earliest cypherpunks and a pioneer in the field of digital currencies. If you've never heard of Nick Szabo, you're in for a treat. He is a computer scientist, legal scholar, and cryptographer who has been active in the field of digital currencies since the early 1990s. He earned his Computer science degree from the University of Washington & his legal doctorate from George Washinton University Law School. Now, Szabo is a very private and reserved person – Tim Ferris titled him the “Quiet Master Of Crypto”. So most available information on Szabo is third party – apart from interviews which he has given. One thing is clear though – Szabo is highly intelligent and has a lifelong obsession with cryptocurrency which stretches back decades before Bitcoin appeared in 2008. He is actually credited with coining the term "smart contracts," which he wrote about back in 1994. He elaborated on them 2 years later as "a set of promises, specified in digital form, including protocols within which the parties perform on these promises". Even back in the 1990s Szabo talked of a decentralised marketplace built on top of these smart contracts where transactions can happen without an intermediary. Does that sound familiar to you? Well somewhat Ironically, despite many citing this as evidence that he could be Satoshi, these digital marketplace descriptions in the early 90s are more aligned with Ethereum today than Bitcoin, but more on that later.
