A sound that has been absent from Royal Air Force and Royal Navy bases for more than a decade now is the sound of the Rolls-Royce Pegasus engine. Although the RAF and RN gave up their Harriers in 2010, the type is still going strong with the Italian Navy, Spanish Navy and the United States Marine Corps. Although the USMC plan to retire their AV-8s next year, the Spanish Navy have announced they plan to keep their fleet in service until the 2030's, at least. This Harrier, known as an EAV-8B Matador II, is the Spanish Navy's designation for the AV-8B Harrier II Plus variant. Currently, the Spanish Navy have 10 single-seat Harriers and one two-seat trainer TAV-8B in service. Two of the single -seaters came to RIAT for the third time in five years to provide their fantastic solo display and to allow the UK public to sit back and reminisce the sight and sound of one of the most famous marvels of British engineering. Informally known by many as the 'Harrier Jump Jet', the Harrier was originally developed by the Hawker Siddeley company in the 1960s. Flying for the first time in December 1967, it emerged as the world's first true V/STOL jet-powered aircraft. Initially designed to operate from improvised bases, short runways and confined areas, it was later adapted for naval use onboard aircraft carriers.
