What we often see with a lot of golfers is the inability to stack the ribs and pelvis in order to load and finish in the golf swing. Couple this with poor pressure strategies at the feet and this is why we get so much compensation in the golf swing. The feet are meant to hold pressure inside the arches like a dam. The more we can hold adequate pressure at the feet, the easier it is for a golfer to stay connected to the ground, and allow for the big toes to stay down as they take the club up as well as post impact on the lead leg. We need good arch connection in order to do so and this allows better loading strategies and prevents having to get more vertical or shifting pressure outside the feet when we can't trap it between the arches. When this happens we tend to see lock out in the trail side knee or disengagement of the pressure between the two hips approaching the top of the backswing. Better foot pressure provides for a better base of support for the ribs and pelvis to stack better and provide better mechanics. A lot of golfers present with flared ribs and a dumped pelvis which drives their pelvis forward making it hard to sense the adductors, hamstrings, abs, and good connection at the arches. Ideally the ribs and pelvis on each side of the body should stack on top of one another like two pistons in a race car. When the pelvis is dumped and the ribs are flared, there is an inability to keep the entire "CANISTER" which exists from the ribs and pelvis like a balloon. We want it to be able to expand 360 degrees when we inhale, so when exhaling we have more snapback or whip effect when throwing a punch or hitting a golf ball. When the ribs flair and the pelvis dumps, it's like PACMAN just bit one side of the canister leaving a big gaping hole on the middle where the belly button is. When this happens the entire spine gets driven forward and it makes it super hard to fill the balloon because it's leaking air badly. This is why we often see players open their feet PACMAN style as well. I'm not saying it's bad to do so, but many players do it out of necessity because they can't get the job done keeping the feet in a more neutral position. When the feet are off players start to have limited size to their balloon filling, it gets harder to create force in the swing. Enter stage right compensations. ahha 1.
