Pain under your right rib cage (also called the upper right quadrant) can be caused by a number of medical conditions that affect the organs in this area. In some cases, gallstones can lead to a condition doctors call cholecystitis, or swollen gallbladder. Cholecystitis can cause a fever, ongoing pain, and yellowing of the skin. Other symptoms include a high temperature, a rapid heartbeat, and pain that travels up to your shoulder. Certain kidney problems can trigger pain under the right rib cage -- especially a kidney stone. Kidney stones form from minerals that don't pass out of your body when you urinate. A kidney stone can also cause severe pain in your lower back or groin when it gets trapped in your urinary tract. Liver disorders are another common cause of right side rib cage pain, including the following. Cirrhosis and Fatty Liver Disease Cirrhosis typically occurs when liver tissue is scarred by long-term, heavy drinking, or a virus that causes damage. Fatty liver is often caused by heavy drinking or bad diet. Hepatitis When you have certain forms of hepatitis, the liver becomes inflamed, often from viral infection. Hepatitis can also cause a fever, itchy or yellowing skin, and reduced appetite and fatigue. Pancreas Problems The pancreas is a gland that sits just below the liver. A condition called pancreatitis, or pancreas inflammation, can cause pain in the right upper quadrant towards the middle of your stomach. With indigestion, you may also get chest discomfort and a dull pain in your stomach area following a meal. Shingles Shingles is an infection caused by the same virus as chickenpox. Shingles usually causes pain and an itchy rash. Symptoms can affect many parts of your body, including the area under your ribs. Heart and Lung Issues Unfortunately, pain in the area of the right rib cage can also be a symptom of lung or liver cancer. Heart problems are another possibility. Typically, pain from heart trouble is more likely to cause pain on the left side, but discomfort may also radiate to the right. Unfortunately, pain caused by cancer occurring in any of the organs already mentioned, is always a grim possibility.
