The Great Venezuelan Railway 1978

The Great Venezuelan Railway was opened on February 1st 1894 following six years of construction. The railway connected the Capital, Carracas, to city of Valencia, the capital of the state of Carabobo. The railway was a total of 111 miles long (179Km) and was considered one of the great engineering accomplishments in Venezuela for its time. The railway finally closed in 1963. Between 1976 and circa 2000. A section of the line between Los Teques and El Encanto, 7km, was open as a tourist attraction. Sadly this is now no more. In 1997 I was invited to visit the railway by my friends Jaime and Francisco. Both of these gentelmen were instrumental in the early success of the preservation movement on the line. The still images in this short sequence were taken from my own video, shot when I last visited the railway in April of 1997. The railway was operational then. All of the vintage footage, both steam and diesel, was taken by a dear friend, Jaime Oliva Esteva , in 1978. Today, sadly, the scene is one of neglect and abandonment.
