It had been on display in Roanoke, Virginia, since Norfolk Southern’s original steam program ended in the 1990s. In 2013, the museum launched the "Fire Up 611!" campaign to raise money and public interest in bringing the locomotive back to life. The campaign successfully raised over $3 million thanks to strong support from railfans, donors, and the general public. Norfolk Southern's revived 21st Century Steam Program in the early 2010s also played a key role, as the railroad supported the restoration and allowed the locomotive to run on its lines. The restoration was completed in 2015, and 611 made its return to excursion service that same year. The return of 611 was significant because it's the only surviving example of the Class J 4-8-4 steam locomotives built by Norfolk & Western’s own Roanoke Shops. It’s known for its sleek, streamlined design and powerful performance, capable of speeds over 100 miles per hour. It represents the peak of American steam locomotive design and engineering. 611 had already earned legendary status during its time running excursions in the 1980s and early 1990s, so its 2015 comeback was a major moment for railfans and the preservation community.
