The answer to the great trivia question, what was the best-selling song of all time BEFORE White Christmas. By most accounts, it was this song, a beautiful classic from 1924, composed by the legendary Walter Donaldson who had so many hits as Gus Kahn's main collaborator, and George A. Whiting, a vaudeville song and dance man and songwriter. This song celebrates something not much celebrated these days - simplicity and contentment. The first part of the verse is often dropped but I have included it here as it is so lovely and it was included in the best-selling version of the song by "the original crooner" Gene Austin. Here's a link to his version, which was #1 for eight weeks in 1928 and really broke the tune to the world. Incredibly unusual arrangement with piano, cello and whistling, but it works so well in creating that cozy atmosphere.
