One of the most important songs that emerged from the progressive movement in the U.S., this was written by two members of The Weavers, a year before they hit #1 on Billboard with "Goodnight, Irene". Sadly, the band would disband in the 1950s and both Hayes and Seeger were blacklisted during the McCarthy Era. The song made the top 10 in 1962 when recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary, and #3 later that year with the Trini Lopez version. It's a song of hope and a call to action. The repeating structure of the song and the rolling rhythm make it quite irresistible, and even today, it resonates well when sung in groups. Here is a link to the original 1950 version, by The Weavers, on Hootenanny Records. • The Weavers (1950) — The Hammer Song [2020... And here is Trini Lopez' percussive, Latin flavored version that made it to #3 on Billboard in 1963. • Trini Lopez - If I Had A Hammer (1963) - HD
