(9 Apr 1997) English/Nat Margaret Thatcher on Wednesday predicted that sleaze would drop off the election menu as Britain approached polling day. Campaigning for the ruling Conservative Party, the former prime minister said her successor John Major would soon be given the opportunity to talk about "the real issues". Baroness Thatcher visited a garden centre and a school in the south-western English town of Christchurch and warned would-be voters against her old foes - the unions. Arriving in Christchurch to a mere smattering of applause from Conservative supporters, Lady Thatcher did her bit Wednesday to rally support for Britain's ailing ruling party. The former prime minister shook hands with locals and children at a gardening centre. Despite the Tories' bad performance in the opinion polls, Baroness Thatcher remained confident and attacked the widespread belief that it is time for a change in government. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I've fought 11 elections as a candidate myself and I've won the lot." Q: "Five years of John Major, how would you assess them?" A: "They've been five good years, I don't understand people saying 'time for change'. It would be a change for the worse and that's a very foolish thing to do." SUPER CAPTION: Baroness Thatcher, Former UK Prime Minister She tried to warn voters about Labour's connections with her arch enemies - the trade unions - and refused to be drawn into the national debate on Conservative corruption. SOUNDBITE: (English) Q: "You don't think its a matter of national concern, the conduct of M-P's?" A: "No. Why are you going on and on and on about it? What is a matter of concern for the future is the major issues - I used the word major! - is the main issues which this election will decide. We changed the whole future of this country in 1979 when the Labour Party now campaigning to win had taken us into a 'winter of discontent' and a country ruled by the unions and we don't want that back." SUPER CAPTION: Baroness Thatcher, Former UK Prime Minister Not only Thatcher, but the Tory faithful expressed confidence that the Conservatives can extend their 18-year grip on power despite their bad showings in opinion polls. SOUNDBITE: (English) Q: "You're still going to lose the election though aren't you?" A: "No, no, absolutely no. We have 35 seats, it will be 34 if we lose Tottenham." Q: "Do you think Lady Thatcher is going to help you win?" A: "Yes, of course she is and John Major and the cabinet and all the rest of them. John Major will go down in history as one of the best prime ministers ever." SUPER CAPTION: Group of Conservative Party supporters Baroness Thatcher later paid a trip to the local Priory Church School. There, she took advantage of the public relations skills she refined as prime minister - even taking time to put a cap on a boy's head. And as Lady Thatcher left the school, she appeared determined not to let Labour return to the position of government that she seized from them 18 years ago.
