What a leap- Red and Blue transitioned to their remakes through color and pixel density, Gold and Silver had huge leaps- 3D assets, far richer color palettes, but Ruby and Sapphire's transition comes via a jump to full 3D- for better and for worse. Launching on the 3DS in 2014, we got Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire- full Hoenn remakes, taking the basic world and story of Hoenn and kinda just… scribbling all over the page, coloring outside the lines, and going to some interesting and baffling places. FireRed and LeafGreen played it way too safe, really only deviating from the originals in minor ways until the short and mediocre Sevii Isles, and while HeartGold and SoulSilver had a mountain of extra content, a vast majority of it, sans an intro to the Safari Zone, a little bit of carryover from Crystal, and the Pokeathlon was sealed in Kanto- the Legendary Hunt, rematches, most Gen 4 evolutions- Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are strictly adherent in some regards, ignoring the existence of Emerald entirely until the post-game, encounter tables that while slightly more generous, in the sense that 1% encounters are mostly eliminated, are almost identical to before, routes being completely unchanged so as not to take any advantage of the 3rd dimension the game is built around, but simultaneously fly off the rails frequently and at random- Maxie and Archie get huge reinventions, Mauville is redesigned, Southern Island becomes an integral plot beat, and a mountain of changes to the later stages of the villain storyline that directly lead to the game going off the rails with new encounters and content- it's nearly schizophrenic with how hard it bounces back and forth between the extremes of being faithful in excess to suddenly being a whole new game. Some changes, mechanics, and features are fantastic- others are quite the opposite- it's a truly fascinating specimen either way, as it bounces between a remake and a complete reimagining on a while.
