American Dipper Forages for Food in the Eel River

A dipper is also called a water ouzel. This is the only aquatic songbird in North America. They are quite fun to watch as they walk about underwater, or poke their heads under the fast-flowing current and come up with a caddisfly larva in their beak! They seem to be constantly on the move, bobbing up and down and walking along in the shallow water. This one foraged for a while, then took a break for a few minutes to stand on a log in the sun. Meanwhile, a lone river otter swam past us, ignoring both the photographer and the dipper! The dipper went about its business.
