Your feet feel miles away from your hips and you might not consider the connection and interplay between them. Join Jill in this excerpt from Walking Well, a six part course co-created with biomechanist Katy Bowman. In Class One: Waking Up Your Feet, Jill (re)introduces you to the bottom of your foot, an area not often thought about, but is one of the most used parts of your body. *Place the ball directly in the bottom of the midfoot (plantar fascia) and breathe, allowing the ball to sink into the tissue. Using appropriate pressure, slowly and methodically move your foot from side to side (inversion, eversion), Cross Fibering and consoling neglected muscles. The next technique, called Hi High Heel, allows you to explore the heel bone, deeply ensconced within the dense fibrous fascia of the heel pad. Take a moment to allow the balls to sink into the fascia, then move your heel from side to side, trying to feel the movement of the calcaneus and break up some of the tough tissue. Use these techniques everyday to not only directly soothe your fabulous feet but also unlock the muscles up the chain. *Try doing a forward bend before and after to see and feel the difference.
