Dr. Jaclyn Stephens is fourth-year, tenure-track assistant professor at Colorado State University in the Department of Occupational Therapy. Her research is focused on traumatic brain injury, which includes sports-related concussions (SRC). In her presentation, Dr. Stephens will introduce her postdoctoral research, which was completed with adolescents with concussion. This work established the foundation for her current research with collegiate athletes with SRC. Notably, athletes with recent SRC have increased vulnerability to repeat SRC when they return to play, and repeat SRC is linked to adverse long-term health outcomes. Both repeat SRC and musculoskeletal injuries have been documented in athletes who were cleared to return to play after an initial SRC. Thus, Dr. Stephens evaluates athletes once they are “cleared’ to return to play after an SRC. She uses behavioral and neuroimaging techniques to identify subtle behavioral deficits and underlying neural mechanisms that may explain athletes’ increased vulnerability to repeat injury.
