This little island stands about 300 metres or so off of Thatcher Point in Torquay, and is populated by seagulls and other wild birds - which is why I kept a respectful height above it. The rock is reputed to have got its name because, when viewed from a certain angle, one of the rocky outcrops resembles a thatcher working on a roof. I've never spotted that angle myself, but enough people must have seen it in years gone by for the name to have stuck! There's a lovely public viewpoint overlooking the rock. It covers a fairly large area in a rather up-market part of Torquay. I'm not saying it's posh, but even the Police are ex-directory up there (If you're too young to get that joke, ask your parents)! There's a large public grass area, with lots of ornamental trees, shrubbery and pampas grass, as well as numerous benches, and the somewhat dilapidated remains of a sunken garden. The trees frame the view down to the rock in a very picturesque manner, and you can walk down through all of these these to reach the tip of Thatcher point for a closer look at the island. You feel that you could almost just reach out and touch the rock from there. Those with strong pareidolia may spot a chubby "baby's face" near the island's tip, just before the loose rocks around 2:08, and I've also spotted what appears to be a seal on the rock in the middle of the larger bay/cove between 3:53 and 4:03. Yep, I crashed the drone on my first take-off. Normally I take off from my carrying case to keep my motors away from grit and dust. But there was a handy bench, and I thought I'd use that instead. But I forgot to consider the slight coastal breeze little randomly gusting in from the sea. One badly-timed gust blew the poor old drone into the back of the bench, and you know the result. Lesson learned! You can see a similar gust hit the drone about two thirds of the way into my launch shot, around 0:29/0:30. You'll see the drone lurch momentarily. Anyway, fingers crossed - apart from changing the propellors - she seems to have suffered no ill-effects so far. I'll have to keep an eye on her for a while to be certain though.
