This is my first Scott MTB Marathon and I’m joining them down in Minehead for a ride around the Exmoor National Park. Upon signing up you have a choice of three routes – We opted for the half. Saying that though, it’s not half distance, it just missed out a few KM of the (possible) harshest terrain. Believe it or not, we’re having a bit of a heat wave here at the moment so on the Saturday when we arrived our thoughts were on suncream and water. Mother nature changed her mind though and on Sunday the clouds came over and unleashed a good amount of rain. I think we got about an hour in to the ride before the first signs of rain and then another hour later it really started to come down. Barely anyone had brought waterproofs with them so it was a case of keep moving or get cold. Fortunately there wasn’t much wind! The course started and ended in Minehead and took us on a tour of Exmoor National Park. It covered various terrain and involved a fair amount of climbing. My GoPro makes the ground look a lot flatter than it was but I loved the climbs over the rocky terrain up hill. It really tested your skills and mental strength. It was also my first ride in clipless pedals on the hardtail and I loved it. I felt more in control. They were a little tricky to clip in some times but once you were in, it really did feel like it made riding easier. I stopped briefly to offer some first aid supplies to a lady who had taken a nasty tumble down a fast hill. After finishing the ride I checked with the organisers who said she did get back safely. Would I recommend the ride? Definitely!
