In this investigation, I’m examining the physical traces attributed to an 1840 Tartarian flood by looking at what remains in the built environment. Rather than relying on written accounts, this video focuses on material evidence: buried lower floors, sudden changes in ground level, sealed openings, sediment layers, and infrastructure that appears partially submerged within later streets. Across multiple locations, these features suggest rapid deposition rather than gradual urban development. Buildings often appear complete below grade, with finished stonework and entrances that no longer align with the surrounding city. In many cases, records describe clearing and rebuilding, but offer limited explanation for how so much material came to cover existing structures so quickly. Operation Unearthing isn’t about assigning cause or intent. It’s about documenting what the ground itself shows when layers are removed. Something left a physical mark around 1840—and it’s still visible if you know where to look.
