There's a book of Zen koans called the Mumonkan, and in this book we get one of the finest pieces of wisdom available anywhere on this here third rock from the sun. It is, basically: "Relax, striver! It's right here, right now. What is? Ordinary mind!! I.e. THE WAY!" Mumonkan Case #19, "Ordinary Mind is the way!!" A few reasons this koan is on my (ordinary) mind today. . . . I met with a friend who met a Great Tibetan Lama, and he made sure to point out to me that "This guy is like on a whole different level than a lightweight Zen monk like you." (Thanks, bro.) Alas, he is not wrong. I am a failed monk from a failed lineage. To wit, I did not receive full teaching transmission from my teacher, who failed to pass his lineage on to any of us, his dumb-a** students. And you know what? Thank GOD for that! There's a great (actually a mediocre) movie from the 90's called As Good as It Gets wherein a character realizes something like: "This ordinary banal life/present moment is as good as it gets!" So too, I think at some point a Zen monk/student must realize the same thing. This moment is it. This moment is everything. Stop seeking the Big E. Manifest the little ME! Because this is as good as it gets! And this is everything! The universe has reduced itself -- its Great Big Infinite Ineffable Selfless Self -- aaaaallllllllll the way down to this. To this tiny little body and life called [insert your name here]. Form is emptiness, the Heart Sutra tells us. But emptiness is also form. It is THIS form, the form I am taking right now, and you too. Yes yes yes! Me writing this, you reading this. This is Buddha. Buddha is imperfection. Buddha is impermanence. Here. Now. Gone. Moment after precious, passing moment. At some point the seeking has to stop, and the manifestation has to begin. Otherwise you're a permanent Zen student, you're always looking down the road to when your enlightenment will finally arrive. Enough! Go ahead! FAIL at Zen!! It's a great way to truly start practicing. A shoutout to my friend and fellow writer and Patron Curtis White, whose new book I draw from for this video!
