The Birth of Taliesin Taliesin’s tale begins with Ceridwen, a powerful enchantress, who brews a magical potion in her cauldron to grant her son, Morfran, unmatched wisdom and inspiration. The potion must simmer for a year and a day, but only the first three drops will contain the power of Awen (divine inspiration). Gwion Bach, a servant boy, is tasked with stirring the cauldron. As he stirs, three drops of the potion accidentally land on his finger. Gwion instinctively licks the drops, gaining the wisdom meant for Morfran. Realizing Ceridwen’s wrath will follow, Gwion flees. The Chase and Transformation Ceridwen pursues Gwion in a dramatic, magical chase where both change forms repeatedly: Gwion becomes a hare, and Ceridwen a greyhound. He becomes a fish, and she an otter. He transforms into a bird, and she into a hawk. Finally, Gwion becomes a single grain of corn, which Ceridwen, now a hen, swallows. Rebirth and Adoption After swallowing the grain, Ceridwen becomes pregnant. She gives birth to a radiant child, knowing it is Gwion reincarnated. Though she initially plans to kill him, his beauty and divine presence move her to let him live. She places him in a leather bag and casts him into the sea. The baby is later discovered by a nobleman, Elffin ap Gwyddno, who raises him as his own. The child is named Taliesin, meaning "shining brow," for his brilliance and glowing presence.
