It is one of the largest South Indian temples and an exemplary example of a fully realized Dravidian architecture. Built by Tamil king Raja Raja Chola I between 1003 and 1010 AD, the temple is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple has a massive colonnaded corridor and one of the largest Shiva lingas in India. It is also famed for the quality of its sculpture, as well as being the location that commissioned the brass Nataraja – Shiva as the lord of dance, in the 11th century. The temple is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu. The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Ranganatha, a reclining form of the Hindu deity Maha Vishnu, located in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu. Constructed in the Dravidian architectural style, the temple has the unique distinction of being not only the foremost among the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu, but also the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world. The temple occupies an area of 155 acres with 81 shrines, 21 towers, 39 pavilions, and many water tanks integrated into the complex. Numerous inscriptions suggest that this Hindu temple served not only as a spiritual center, but also a major economic and charitable institution. The Kothandaramaswamy Temple at Rameswaram is a shrine dedicated to the Hindu deity Rama. The temple is estimated to have been constructed about 500-1000 years ago. Rama, the main idol, is depicted as having a bow (Kothandam), and hence the name Kothandaramaswamy for the idol. The temple is believed to be the place where Vibhishana asked Rama for refuge. It is also said that after the slaying of Ravana, Rama performed the "Pattabhishekam" (ascension to king of Lanka) for Vibhishana at this place Dhanushkodi is famous for its temple, Rameswaram is also frequented by the curious who travel here to see the ghost town of Dhanushkodi. Just 10-odd-km long, Dhanushkodi has an importance in Indian mythology that is far greater than the land mass it occupies. As per mythology, Dhanushkodi was the spot where Lord Rama and his army built Ram Setu, otherwise known as Adam's Bridge across the sea connecting Rameshwaram Island (Tamil Nadu) and Mannar Island (Sri Lanka), to rescue his wife Sita from the clutches of the demon king Ravana. It is not possible to see Sri Lanka from Dhanushkodi. It's about 18 Kms from the Dhanushkodi Beach.
