Here is a truly rare recording of Tulsa's extraordinary guitarist Tommy Crook performing "Malaguena" live with Paul McGhee in 1968. They performed at a club in Tulsa called the Rafters. Among the songs they performed live was a medley of Beatles hits and a tribute to Big Bands. The album was titled Mr. Guitar & Mr. Drums In Concert and was on the Tulsa-based Derrick label. "Malaguena" is credited to Cuban musician Ernesto Lecuona dating back to 1933, but had long been a theme common to folk songs in Spain back in the 1700s. Tommy was 24 years old at the time, and recently passed away. His style of guitar playing was using the lower E and A strings as bass while utilizing the other four strings to create magic. Seven years earlier Tommy was in The Accents, a band led by Tulsa's David Gates while David was in college and they backed Chuck Berry in June 1961. Leon Russell had been in the first lineup of The Accents in 1957 when David formed them while attending Will Rogers High School in Tulsa. Paul McGhee had been in Bob Wills' band when Hank Thompson met him in 1951 and asked him to join his Brazos Valley Boys. Paul was with Hank for six years. Hank Thompson was one of Leon Russell's country idols, along with Hank Williams. Russell used a combination of their names for his country alter ego Hank Wilson.
