Here are two versions of "Betty & Dupree," a song about teenagers Frank Du Pre and Betty Andrews back in 1921 when Frank robbed Kaiser's jewelry store and murdered Irby Walker, the Pinkerton agent who was the security guard. The first version presented here was recorded in 1955 by Brownie McGhee. The second version is an instrumental recorded in November 1963 by four musicians hired by Jimmy Hilliard, calling themselves The Sidewalk Swingers. The late afternoon session was led by Russell Bridges, a promising young pianist who came to Hollywood from Tulsa, Oklahoma. With him were Glen Campbell on guitar, James Bond on bass and Hal Blaine on drums. Jim Dickson was the producer. The dozen or so songs recorded during the days of sessions went on the Warner Brothers album Folk Swingin' Harpsichord, which was the instrument Russell Bridges played. You know him better as Leon Russell. Other albums credited to various names were released over the years with alternate mixes of those recordings, such as The Swinging 12 String by The In Group. Note that the album jacket in this video has a message handwritten by Glen Campbell to a DJ named Jay (Jay Stevens at KBG in San Diego?), telling him the album track "Saturday Night" was one worth promoting.
