Being one of the few Neo Geo CD exclusives, ADK World is a miscellaneous fan disk with mini-games and lots of information regarding the inner workings of one of SNK's closest partners, Alpha Denshi Corporation, who are best known for their "World Heroes" fighting game series, but have also produced several oddities along with their affiliate, Miraisoft (due to being contractually obligated to work with SNK, they formed this studio to circumvent their contract and produced "Treasure Gear" and "Star Monja" for Sony's Playstation). You can't really expect too much from your ordinary fan disc, but ADK went out of their way to make this one better than average. It features loads of trivia and cameos from existing ADK franchises as well as the exclusive character, Nightingale (a nurse who is loosely based off of Florence Nightingale, the healing pioneer), and several parodies throughout (some examples include the mini-game "19YY", which came out a few weeks before Capcom's "19XX" and stars World Heroes' Brocken, and a reference to the "Konami Code" in one of the fan letter segments you can read). You can even gain stars by fulfilling certain requirements like beating certain modes, reading certain materials, and gaining certain ranks. If you get all six stars, Mudman will finally unveil two game promos and a staff roll for all your efforts (which functions as a basic shooter no less and rewards you with additional artworks, little staff quips, and a final star). Anyway, here's what each mode offers (In Order of Appearance): ADK Dome / The Strongest Champion: This is a fun little card battling game where players get cards of different strengths and use them against the computer. As you can see their cards, there's a bit of strategy involved, and most cards have different symbols that adhere to your Janken / Rock-Paper-Scissor rules. The little chibi illustrations are cool, each character has their own ending, and there's a code to play as the final boss, Zeus (Up/Down/Left/Right B+D at the character select screen). Beat it once for a star. ADK Development Building: This is where World Heroes' Jeanne D'Arc (Janne) and Ryoko Izumo react to fan mail sent to the staff! It's a little humorous and has basic spoken bits. You occasionally come across choices which unveil different bits of information, letters and images sent to ADK, but regardless of which routes you pick, you'll get a star if you see it to the end. Brown Research Establishment: World Heroes' Brown Sugar lets you get a little one on one time with your favorite WH characters by letting you peek into his private database. They talk about a variety of things such as hobbies, likes/dislikes, favorite weapons and armor, nonsense, things of that nature. It's fairly brief. Clear at least one paragraph for each character to get a star. Cafe De ADK / Graphic Exhibition Corner: This is like Brown's Lab, but considerably more extensive and covers many of ADK's prominent titles and characters. You have to read from every corner to get a star. Neo-Quiz: Described as a "fun" quiz game full of cultural and underground references, this is definitely the hardest of the mini-games to complete. Like a typical quiz game, you get illustrations and backgrounds of various characters (though the narrator and questions are random) and you have to answer 45 questions successfully to clear the game that can range from questions about their many games to real world topics like writing structure, units of measurement, etc. You start with 5 life (losing one with each wrong answer) and three additional credits for a total of twenty strikes by default. Each question has a time limit and four multiple choice answers, and if you manage to get a "perfect" on your opponent, you gain one extra life. Each run is ranked based on your answers and used credits and goes all the way to S rank. As you progress, your opponents get more life too (up to 9). While it's not necessary, if you do extremely well, you'll face Nightingale as a super secret character (for a total of 54 questions). Clear this mode for a star. Game Theater 19YY: A horizontal parody shooter featuring Brocken that features a few random levels with random enemy patterns. The game's bosses periodically change as you move up in rank by amassing a certain number of kills and Brocken can execute a few special attacks by pressing multiple buttons when his health is low. To star this, you need more than 2000 kills, making it the most tedious game. Mudman Mystery: This features extras that can only be accessed when everything has a star. Most fan discs have wallpapers, artwork, music and other stuff tacked on, but ADK sorta gives you a game with those trappings. While it won't sell NGCDs, it's a cool novelty nonetheless. This video shows a little of each segment. Enjoy. Note: I edited or almost eliminated every load time as NGCD has fairly long ones. They averaged between 15-25 seconds each.
