We hit Penrose Commons with 719Offroad, Live Life Offroad, and Tim Lowder to test what many people claim doesn’t exist — fun, challenging off-road trails in Penrose Commons for small-tire and full-size rigs. We ran OHV trails 6102B and 6102F, a moderately hard route that connects into one of the tightest and most technical trails for moderately built full-size rigs in the area. These trails only opened to full-size vehicle travel in October 2024, and they’re still extremely narrow after years of being limited to ATVs, dirt bikes, and SXS traffic. The group tackled the trail in a Ford Bronco, a Toyota 4Runner, a Toyota pickup, and an XJ buggy — and the difference in vehicle size and wheelbase became very real very quickly. The route is packed with tight switchbacks, narrow rock obstacles, shelf roads, cactus, and trees that will absolutely scratch your rig if you’re not careful. One wrong move on several sections could result in serious trail damage. During the run, Live Life Offroad took trail damage, busting a taillight, while our Bronco struggled repeatedly to clear turns that clearly weren’t designed with 4-door wheelbases in mind. This video challenges the idea that Penrose Commons only has fun trails for buggy rigs outside of the Independence trail system. If you’re running a small-tire rig, mid-size 4x4, or full-size vehicle and want to know what these newly opened routes are actually like, this is a real-world look at the risks, limits, and rewards.
