MORRIS, IL - On January 6th, 2020 at 6:20PM, Morris Police Officers responded to a vehicle accident in the 800 block of E. Washington St. While responding to the call, the officers were advised that the suspect had fled the scene on foot. The officers soon located a man less than a half mile away from the accident matching the description that witnesses provided and began questioning him. The suspect claimed that he was not driving, was under the influence of alcohol, and that all he had done wrong was improperly store his one ounce of marijuana that he was carrying in his hoodie pocket. Eventually, the officers brought the suspect to the scene of the accident where witnesses verified that he was the driver of the vehicle that had fled the scene on foot. The suspect was then arrested for leaving the scene of an accident and transported to the Morris Police Department for further processing. While there, the suspect consented to performing a field sobriety test. During the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the suspect displayed involuntary jerking, no smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset prior to a 45 degree angle in both eyes. After the suspect informed the officer that he had bad knees, he stated that he understood the walk-and-turn test and had no questions. The suspect then stepped out of his starting position multiple times, did not touch heel-to-toe on step two and six while walking forward, made an improper turn, and missed heel-to-toe on steps one and six while walking back. The suspect further extended his arms for balance during the test. For the one leg stand, the suspect raised his arms for balance twice and hopped on his left foot before raising his arms for balance the second time. At the conclusion of the field sobriety test, the suspect was advised that he would be charged with driving under the influence, or DUI. He was then escorted into the booking room for further processing.
