Colorado Man Arrested for DUI After Refusing to Get Out of His Vehicle

VAIL, CO - On May 7th, 2020 at 11:45PM, a Vail Police Officer observed a vehicle entering a traffic circle in an outbound lane near the entrance of Marriott's StreamSide at Vail. The vehicle then drove past the officer who was stopped facing the westbound direction of South Frontage Road. The officer turned around and followed the vehicle which then abruptly turned into a Conoco gas station. The officer pulled into the parking lot and activated his emergency lights. The officer instructed the suspect who had already gotten out of his vehicle to return to his car. The suspect told the officer that he was on his way home and had entered the parking lot of the gas station because he was scared of the officer. The suspect claimed that he was at nearby residence to help out a friend, but had taken a wrong turn. The suspect was observed struggling to find the proper documentation for his insurance and registration during the stop. The suspect further claimed that he was acting sluggish due to paranoia. After confirming the suspect's information with Vail Communications, the officer returned to the suspect and asked him to step out of the vehicle. The suspect claimed he was intimidated by police and would remain in his vehicle. The officer then asked the suspect if he would perform voluntary roadside maneuvers to which the suspect declined to participate. The officer then asked the suspect to find valid insurance. The suspect did find the documentation. When asked if the suspect had taken any medication, he affirmed that he had, but was allowed to drive while taking the medication. The suspect also denied consuming marijuana earlier in the evening. At one point, the suspect claimed that he had a "couple beers" in the night, but later retracted the statement. The suspect was once again asked to partake in voluntary roadside maneuvers, but refused to participate. The suspect further claimed that he had worked for the Emirati royal family and asked the officer to not let them find out about the predicament. Finally, the suspect told the officer that he was done with the conversation and was arrested for DUI. While in the police cruiser, the suspect consented to a blood sample for chemical analysis. However, once at Vail Health Hospital, the suspect refused to provide a blood sample.
