China’s Proposal for a Tunnel to Hainan

China is considering building a 12 billion dollar tunnel to the island of Hainan. In the south of China, the island of Hainan is separated from the mainland by the thin, 20 kilometer wide Qiongzhou strait. The island hosts 10 million people and a booming tourism industry. Despite this, currently, there are no connections across it. For this reason, the idea of building a tunnel across the strait is being seriously pursued. A tunnel would increase tourism on the island, remove transport congestion, and provide China with a strategic advantage in the South China Sea. However, the idea also has several issues, including environmental damage, cost concerns and earthquakes.
