5 Days With Apo Whang Od The Oldest Tattoo Artist In The World 🇵🇭

🌺 Buscalan, Philippines ―Recently Apo Whang Od made the front cover of Vogue. In commemoration, here is an older video of my experience getting tatted by the legend herself, Apo Whang Od. Special thanks to @tylerdudesir for creating this video 🙏🏽 From Bontoc, we took a bus to the mountain, the bus broke down in the middle of the Philippine mountains, motorbiked to Buscalan, backpacked and hiked one hour to the village. The view was incredibly beautiful with rice field mountain views. We played with the animals, pigs, cats, snakes, dogs, helped pick up trash, sang karaoke, bought presents, saw the church. We arrived feeling very uncomfortable at first only to discover how warm, welcoming and hospitable the locals were. They invited us to their house and offered us water, snails, herbs, rice, wine, betelnut. We arrived at Butbut Proper very scared and unsure, but then ended up as friends and invited to a birthday party where all 5 villages of the ButBut tribe would attend. They slaughtered 3 carabao (water buffalo) as tradition. Normally they would cook all the carabao meat and distribute it but now they give it raw so people can cook it any way they want. All the organs are cooked: head, intestines, lungs, kidneys, heart, stomach. We were lucky enough to witness and even be a part of a rare traditional cultural filipino celebratory dance specific to the Butbut tribe where each member of the village gongs on instruments and follows the dance of the leader mimicking animal and bird like movements. We spent 4 days in Buscalan in order to wait for Apo Whang Od to give us our tattoos. We gave her presents including her favorite, chocolate. We were shocked to be surrounded by so many people. My tattoo took a very long time with breaks in between. Apo Whang Od retired from tattooing special designs and only tattoos her 3 dotted signature. But I was lucky enough to get tatted a special design by the legend herself which she discontinued. Apo Whang Od uses charcoal from the bottom of a pot and hammers on your skin with a calamansi thorn to let the ink seep in. By patiently waiting 4 days for her to be in a good mood, to say that I'm Filipino and that I have the strength to endure her hand poke tattoos, and to also make her like you and sprinkle in some presents, I was able to get her special tattoo.
