The BEST Day YET, 191 Days, and all it took was a bike ride. After more than four months of living in Da Nang, Vietnam, I finally decided to take on one of my biggest personal challenges yet — cycling up Son Tra Peninsula, also known as Monkey Mountain. The first time I tried it, I barely lasted ten minutes and only managed around 100 meters of elevation before tapping out. But I wasn’t going to let that be the end of it. A week later, I came back stronger — and this time, I made it all the way to the top. This video isn’t just about a bike ride. It’s about persistence, expat life, and finding small wins in Vietnam that keep you motivated when living abroad long-term. 🌏 About Son Tra Peninsula (Monkey Mountain) - I did get robbed by a monkey too :) Located on the northeastern edge of Da Nang, Son Tra Peninsula is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. It rises dramatically from the South China Sea (East Sea), forming a lush green headland that’s visible from almost anywhere in Da Nang. The peak of the peninsula sits at roughly 693 meters above sea level, which makes it a serious climb whether you’re cycling, hiking, or riding a motorbike. The area is protected as a nature reserve — home to rare species like the red-shanked douc langur, beautiful jungle trails, and panoramic viewpoints that look back over Da Nang City, the coastline, and Marble Mountains in the distance. For cyclists, Son Tra is famous (and feared) for its brutal gradients, which can hit over 15% in some sections. The route winds up from the base near Man Thai Beach or InterContinental Da Nang Resort, depending on which side you start from. It’s around 10–12 kilometers of climbing with an elevation gain of nearly 700 meters, making it one of the most challenging rides in central Vietnam — especially under the tropical sun. 🚴♂️ Cycling in Da Nang Da Nang has quickly become one of the best cities in Vietnam for cycling. Wide roads, coastal scenery, and access to the Hai Van Pass and Son Tra Peninsula make it a dream for both road cyclists and mountain bikers. There’s a growing expat cycling community here, with early-morning group rides and plenty of friendly locals who love to share routes and tips. What’s great about cycling in Da Nang is the mix of urban and natural terrain — you can ride along My Khe Beach at sunrise, explore small fishing villages, or take on steep mountain climbs all in the same day. The weather can be unpredictable, though — especially in the wet season, when sudden downpours turn every ride into an adventure (or a struggle!). 🌴 Life as an Expat in Da Nang At this point in the vlog, it’s been six months and three days since I left England, and almost five months of living in Vietnam. Time has flown by — life in Da Nang is starting to feel normal, yet still unpredictable in the best ways. What I love about living here is how every week feels like a mix of calm and chaos. One day I’m at the beach with a coffee in hand, the next I’m grinding up a 700-meter climb wondering what I’ve gotten myself into. Da Nang’s mix of local authenticity and modern comfort makes it perfect for long-term expats. You’ve got affordable apartments, world-class beaches, vibrant cafés, and access to nearby adventures in Hoi An, Hue, and the central highlands. It’s big enough to have everything you need, but small enough to still feel connected. 🌅 Why Son Tra is a Must-See Whether you’re cycling, hiking, or just exploring by scooter, Son Tra Peninsula is one of those unmissable spots in central Vietnam. From the Linh Ung Pagoda with its massive 67-meter Lady Buddha statue, to hidden beaches like Bai But and Bai Rang, it’s full of quiet places that show Vietnam’s natural beauty at its best. And once you reach the top — after all that sweat and pain — the view over Da Nang Bay makes it all worth it. 🎬 In This Vlog Attempting and finally conquering Son Tra Mountain 🚴♂️ Real talk about expat motivation and routine What it’s like cycling in Da Nang, Vietnam Views, wildlife, and the chaos of mountain weather 🌦️ #vietnam #danang #fitnesschallenge #cycling #biking #fitness #mountainbike #hybrid
